Audiology Department

Audiology is a rapidly developing field, and the need for audiological services is clear. A national study of hearing showed that approximately 16% of the population have a significant hearing loss, indicating that working in this field is an important area of the NHS.

Healthcare science staff specialising in audiology, work with patients of all ages as part of a multidisciplinary team of professionals. They identify and assess hearing and balance function and their associated disorders, recommending and providing appropriate therapeutic rehabilitation and management.

Audiology Neonatal Hearing Screening Pure Tone Audiologram

Newborn hearing screeners work in neonatal units, postnatal wards, and in hospitals and clinics. They are involved in identifying which newborn babies need to undergo a hearing assessment and after gaining consent from the parent or guardian, undertake this using  screening equipment. They will be responsible for making sure that the equipment they are using is working correctly. They are expected to record all the results accurately using various computer systems and forward these to appropriate healthcare staff requiring them. Newborn hearing screeners work as a part of a team with staff including healthcare scientists, neonatal nursesGPs and health visitors.

At Hameed Latif Hospital, we started first neonatal hearing screening unit in 2013. Here all the new born babies of Hameed Latif hospital are screened by OAE. We have been screened more than 5000 new born babies till now. All the babies who donot pass the screening test are recalled for follow up. The babies who are confirmed for having hearing loss are scheduled for cochlear implant.

Cochlear implants are prosthetic devices designed to restore some hearing to adults and children with a  severe to profound sensorineural hearing loss by converting the acoustic input signal into an electrical pattern that is interpreted as sound by the user. A cochlear implant consists of internal components that are surgically placed and external components that require fitting and programming. Cochlear implants are considered the only medical treatment fo r severe to profound hearing loss.
